How to Cook with Stainless Steel Cookware



Professional chefs and home cooks around the world rely on tri-ply stainless steel cookware to sear, fry, sauté and roast their way to incredibly executed meals, but keeping your pots and pans looking shiny and new can be a challenge... Read on to find out our tips for preventing your food from sticking to your stainless steel cookware, and what to do if you've made a mess of things!

Here are some tips for preventing your food from sticking to your pan when cooking.    

• If you’re planning on cooking meat, pork or chicken, make sure to take it out of the fridge 15 minutes before putting it in the pan. Pat dry with paper towel to remove excess moisture, and if you like, season and rub with a good quality olive oil.

• Heat your pan, but make sure not to turn your element TOO high! You may feel the urge to crank your stove’s dial, but it is generally not necessary.
Medium (or just a little higher than medium) is often the perfect place to start. Working at too high a heat will result in scorched exterior and undercooked interior!

• Let your pan have a few minutes to really warm up, This is a really important step, so don’t rush it. It may take 2-3 minutes to thoroughly heat your pan, especially with a tri-ply stainless steel construction. Ensuring you take the time to do this properly will make sure the heat is evenly distributed and help prevent sticking.

• Add some olive oil to your pan. You can use butter as well, or a combination of both. Let the oil heat well and swirl around the pan. (If using butter, be careful not to let it burn!) Refrain from using store-bought non-stick sprays… Not only are they full of all kinds of chemicals and propellants, but they actually build up over time and will make it extremely hard to clean your pan and will cause sticking. If you want to cut oil for health reasons, try using an oil mister like one of these Cuisipro or Prepara Oil Misters...

• Now it’s time to put in your meat or chicken… This is the part where most people go horribly wrong… DON’T (and I repeat - DO NOT) mess with the meat or chicken once you have put it in the pan. Don’t life up the edges and don’t try to move it around. Let it be! You want to let the meat brown until it ‘releases’ from the pan, and it will WHEN it’s fully seared, so be patient!

• Once it ‘releases’, flip and repeat. If you are working with a thick cut of meat, you can also transfer your pan to the oven and let it roast for about 8 minutes to get the centre cooked (especially if you are working with chicken or pork). This is one of the things we love about stainless steel cookware - you can simply pop the pan in the oven to finish the cooking process.

By taking these steps, you will notice that cooking with stainless steel is much easier and your results will be much better… Now, on to CLEANING!


Made a mess of your cookware? Fear not...            

Ok, we’ve all been guilty of answering the phone while we’re cooking, losing a little bit of focus and scorching our pans. It happens. Don’t worry. One of the great things about stainless steel cookware is that it can take a serious beating - and that is the main reason stainless steel is used so widely in commercial kitchens. It will take love, care, elbow grease and our favourite cleansing product ever to sort you out!



Bar Keepers Friend has been around since 1882, and is a premium all-purpose specialty cleaning product that does not contain bleach! The same non-bleach formula that put a shine to the brass rails of taverns at the turn of the century is used in households today on stainless steel, porcelain and ceramic surfaces among many others.

Cleaning a dirty pan soon after cooking makes things a little easier than letting the grease harden and set, but DO NOT take a hot pan right off the element and run it under cold water as this could cause warping. Simply soak your pan in warm soapy water in your sink, or you can fill it with warm soapy water and let it rest on the once-warm element to loosen bits of grease. This just might be enough to clean it up, especially if you use a Euro Scrubby or stainless steel scrubby. If that doesn't work - move on to the next step!

Cleaning your Stainless Steel Pans

If you have stubborn spots that just won’t budge, sprinkle a good amount of Bar Keepers Friend into the pan and add just enough water to make a paste. Now, start scrubbing with your EuroScrubby or stainless steel scrubby. This may take a few minutes but you will eventually become victorious and your stainless steel pan will look as good as new! If you need EXTRA scrubbing power, sprinkle some Bar Keepers Friend on the bottom of the pan, add just enough water to moisten and cover with a paper towel (see step 2 below). Let sit for an hour, or even overnight, and in the morning you should be able to give it one last scrub with your EuroScrubby or stainless steels scrubby and have it looking like new again!
