Caring for your PANDORA Jewelry at Home

Caring for your PANDORA Jewelry

When you first receive the gift of PANDORA sterling silver jewelry, it will be bright, shiny and beautiful, but inevitably, as it’s worn and enjoyed it will eventually begin to tarnish - as is to be expected of all genuine silver jewelry. The surface might turn slightly yellow, and if not cleaned, will gradually shift from yellow to black. This discoloration is the result of oxidization and is caused primarily by two things: contact with sulfur compounds, and moisture.

Not to worry... Tarnishing is a natural occurrence and is not permanently harmful to your silver. In fact, PANDORA actually uses this as a detailing technique (oxidization) on many of their sterling silver pieces.

Your PANDORA jewelry must be carefully handled and cleaned regularly to maintain its beautiful appearance and ensure its longevity.

In these Tips & Tricks, you’ll learn more about:
Tarnishing, what NOT to clean with, polishing cloths, cleaning with soap and water, cleaning and maintaining leather and how to properly store your jewelry.

TARNISHING
ALL .925 genuine sterling silver will tarnish over time. But it will happen much faster when it comes into contact with agents such as perfume, salty air, sulphur, skin creams, hairspray, chlorine and acidic skin ph. The amount of tarnishing (oxidization) that occurs is dependent on the skin and care habits of the wearer. Tarnishing is therefore not a manufacturing fault.

To reduce tarnishing, PANDORA recommends that you remove your jewelry before going to bed, showering, bathing and refrain from swimming or entering a hot tub with your jewelry on. Exposure to perspiration, perfumes, cleaning agents, chlorine, salt water and silver polish may result in compromising the integrity of your jewelry.

It’s pretty easy to care for your PANDORA jewelry. Follow these tips & tricks to keep your jewelry sparkling.

We recommend that you NOT use harsh chemical jewelry cleaners.

You should never expose PANDORA jewelry to liquid silver cleaner or other harsh chemicals, not even chemicals meant for cleaning jewelry. Jewelry cleaning agents may alter the color of your jewelry and damage the organic parts such as leather, wood or pearls.

Instead, invest in a jewelry cleaning cloth...

PANDORA Polishing Cloth

Using a silver polishing cloth is a great way to remove tarnish from your PANDORA jewelry. These soft cloths contain a mild chemical that helps easily remove oxidization from silver surfaces. Simply rub the silver piece with a clean section of the cloth and watch as all the tarnish disappears.

For best results, follow these steps:

POLISHING CLOTH METHOD
• Carefully remove your charms from your clasp bracelet. (Make sure to do this somewhere where your charms will not roll off and fall on the floor, use a small tray.)
Clean your PANDORA clasp bracelet by sandwiching the bracelet between the cloth and gently pulling along several times.

Then, rub the clasp against the cloth several times to add shine.
Next, take each charm, one by one, and gently rub on all sides. You will start to see a dark color on your cloth - don’t worry, this is normal. Be extra gentle when polishing pieces with organic materials like wood, pearls and leather. Only polish silver parts with the cloth.

Now you’re ready to put your charms all back on your bracelet and enjoy wearing it again!
All this polishing may have made your fingers grey! If so, wash your hands with warm water and soap or use baby wipes to remove the residue from your fingers.

CLEANING WITH SOAP AND WATER
Cleaning your PANDORA jewelry more thoroughly can be done easily at home. Simply add a drop of mild dish soap to lukewarm water and clean your jewelry with a soft toothbrush. A toothbrush is an excellent tool for jewelry with patterns which may otherwise be difficult to clean. If a piece of jewelry is very dirty, leave it in the soap and water mixture and let it soak for a few minutes before using the soft toothbrush.

Important: Jewelry with leather, wood or pearls should not be cleaned using this method. These materials should never be soaked or rubbed.

CLEANING AND MAINTAINING LEATHER

Pandora Leather Clasp Bracelets come in a variety of colours and finishes.

Use a very soft and dry cloth for cleaning your leather jewelry. Leather conditioner can be applied and will serve to protect the leather from spills or stains, and helps keep it soft and supple by restoring essential oils. Using professional leather conditioners is a great way to improve the overall lifespan of the leather, making it resistant to water and humidity.

You can also clean leather with a mild soap such as soap flakes or saddle soap. Create suds in a bowl and apply the suds to the leather surface with a soft lint-free cloth. Do not use the soapy water. The suds are safer to use as they reduce the risk of bleach type marks and streaks. Be careful to keep the cloth barely damp - not wet. Use a dry soft cloth to wipe up any remaining moisture and let it dry completely. Use the damp cloth on the entire piece to blend areas which will seem lighter after cleaning.

Do not try to dry the leather item near heat, as this will cause the leather to become brittle and possibly shrink. After the cleaning of the item is complete, rub a leather conditioner into the material.

STORING YOUR JEWELRY
When your PANDORA jewelry is not being worn, it should be stored separately in a protective (lined) box or a tarnish-resistant pouch. It can also be stored in a plastic zip lock bag made of Mylar or polyethylene.

PANDORA Anti-Tarnish Pouch

Try not store your jewelry in the bathroom. Tarnishing will occur faster due to humidity and to sulphites - which can be found in some toilet freshener sets.

Please note that the PANDORA gift boxes are not made for long-term storage. These boxes are not airtight, and since humidity in the air is a major culprit when it comes to tarnishing, keeping jewelry in the gift box for extended periods of time will not prevent tarnishing. If you choose to store your PANDORA jewelry in one of these boxes, make sure the jewelry is placed in an anti-tarnish pouch first!
